Environmental Impact of Natural Rubber Membrane Production

These processes require large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals.


Impact on Biodiversity


The demand for natural rubber has led to the expansion of rubber plantations, resulting in deforestation. This deforestation leads to habitat loss for various plant and animal species, including those that are critically endangered. Additionally, the conversion of natural forests into monoculture rubber plantations disrupts the ecological balance, reducing biodiversity and promoting the spread of pests and diseases.


Pollution and Waste Generation


The production process of natural rubber membranes involves the use of chemicals such as ammonium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, and sodium hypochlorite. These chemicals, if not properly managed, can contaminate water bodies, soil, and air, causing pollution and harming ecosystems. Moreover, the wastewater generated during processing may contain high levels of pollutants, including nitrogen and phosphorus, which can contribute to eutrophication and harm aquatic life.

While rubber extraction from trees is sustainable, the expansion of rubber plantations can lead to deforestation and loss of biodiversity. The production process involves the use of chemicals and generates waste that can pollute the environment if not managed properly.
