How Do You Retrofit a Ceramic Membrane System into an Existing Chlor-Alkali Brine Line?

A retrofit is not a single-equipment swap. On an operating chlor-alkali line, replacing or adding a filtration section means understanding the current process, the exact bottleneck, the physical and control interfaces, and the window in which work can be done — before any performance is promised.

Start from the problem, not the equipment

The first step is to define what must actually change. Common triggers include unstable filtrate quality, rising pressure or differential pressure, reduced capacity, frequent cleaning, high operator attention, filter-aid handling, or a footprint that cannot accept the next expansion. Each points to a different scope, so the retrofit review should begin with evidence:

  • Current process — PFD/P&ID, equipment list, year installed, normal/peak capacity and the existing filtration or clarification route.

  • Problem evidence — filtrate-quality history, pressure/TMP trends, capacity loss, cleaning records, media or filter-aid use, operator intervention and downtime.

  • Interfaces — available footprint, nozzle and piping sizes, pump duty, materials, power, instrument and DCS signals, access, lifting, drainage, CIP and utilities.

Define the change, then the implementation

Once the bottleneck is clear, the objective should be ranked — quality, capacity, maintenance, consumables, automation, footprint, supplier risk or expansion — so the top three drive the design. Implementation then needs the permitted shutdown window, construction constraints, a phased cutover plan and an acceptance test, together with a named plant or EPC contact for each interface.

When a pilot is the right first move

If the feed or the scale-up basis is uncertain, a representative pilot should come before a full commitment. A useful pilot proves filtrate quality and a stable operating window — not only short-term flux — by recording TMP or pressure development, cleaning recovery, operating cycle, solids handling and mass balance.
